Baby Teeth Care

When Do Teeth Start To Appear?

  • Primary teeth start developing in the womb at around 5 weeks gestation
  • Between 6 to 10 months, your baby’s first teeth are likely to appear. These are usually the 2 front teeth on the bottom jaw
  • By the time your little one is 3 years old, they generally have all 20 of their primary teeth.

Helpful Tips For Caring For Their Teeth:

  • Provide a nutritious and balanced diet including fresh fruit and vegetables, wholegrain cereals, lean meats and dairy foods
  • Limit intake of high sugar foods, such as juice
  • If your baby’s teeth haven’t appeared, gently wipe their gums with a soft moistened cloth once per day
  • When their teeth start to appear, a toothbrush suitable for babies should be used with plain water up until 18 months of age after their last evening feed
  • If your baby is drinking from a bottle, transition them to a cup around 6 -8 months of age
  • Don’t let them take a bottle or drink to bed
  • Avoid offering your baby numerous snacks during the day. Try to establish set meal and snack times.

What Is Tooth Decay?

Each time your baby eats or drinks milk, residual bits of food can remain in the mouth. The bacteria in the mouth can turn this into acid and over time eat away at the surface of the tooth and result in holes or cavities.

What To Look For?

Signs of early tooth decay can be hard to spot. If you are concerned or notice your baby having any of the following it may be a good idea to have a chat to your dentist:

  • Red, swollen gums
  • A dull white line develop along the gum line (near where the tooth connects to the gum)
  • Brown or white spots on the teeth.

When Do You Make An Appointment With A Dentist?

The Australian Dental Association recommends that you start check-ups with a dentist from an early age (around 18 months) and recommend regular visits.
