Expressing Breast Milk

Almost all breastfeeding mothers in Australia give their baby expressed breast milk at some point before they reach 6 months of age. Feeding your baby expressed breast milk is safe if done properly and it can be expressed by hand or by using a breast pump.

For more, see Expressing Breast Milk – Methods.

There are a variety of reasons as to why mothers may choose to express breast milk, these include:

  • Their baby is sick or premature
  • Being temporarily separated, so they can’t feed
  • They are returning to paid work
  • Their milk supply needs to be increased
  • Their breasts are uncomfortably full.
