I Am Going Back To Work Soon, How Can I Balance This With Breastfeeding?

It’s very common for mothers to return to work while their baby is breastfeeding. Many workplaces are actively supportive of this. Some provide facilities where you can express and store breast milk. Other designated ‘mother friendly workplaces’, offer ‘lactation breaks’ for breastfeeding your baby or expressing breast milk.

Some things to consider include;

  • Talking to your employer to find out what options are available for when you return
  • It may take some time to get into a routine that works for both you and your baby
  • Ideally you should breast feed your baby just before you leave for work and as soon as you get home
  • If you choose to mix feed, you can provide bottles of formula for work time feeds, while continuing to breastfeed at non-work times. For more, see Mixed Feeding
  • Remember the longer you breastfeed the greater the benefits for your baby.

Can I Breastfeed In Public?

Yes, you are able to breastfeed anywhere. This is supported by the Anti-Discrimination Act.

At first you might feel uncomfortable, but with time you will become more confident breastfeeding in public. Wearing shawls or loose clothing can help you make breastfeeding more discrete, most people won’t even notice.

Keep an eye out for baby feeding or parent rooms in shopping centres if you would like to breastfeed in private.

How Long Can Breast Milk Be Stored?

The length of time fresh breast milk can be stored depends on how you’re storing it. To see how long your storage method will keep your breast milk, see Storing Expressed Milk.

How to breastfeed on demand?

Either sit or lie down. Make sure you are comfortable and your back is well supported.

Support your baby side on, with their nose opposite your nipple. Find the breastfeeding position that works for you.

Brush your baby’s lips with your nipple so they can latch on. When they open their mouth, quickly bring your baby chin-first to the breast.
