How Should I Care For My Toddler’s Ears?

To clean your toddler ears, simply wipe the outside of the ear with a damp, soft cloth. It is not recommended to use cotton buds as they can damage the ear and push wax further in. If you are concerned about a build-up of wax in their ears check with your health care professional.

What Can Cause Ear Infections?

Ear infections are common among toddlers and, around two-thirds of all children may suffer from an ear infection by their second birthday. This is because they are more susceptible to colds and upper respiratory infections. When a child is suffering from these illnesses the middle ear often doesn’t drain properly because of inflammation in their tiny eustachian tubes, this can result in an ear infection.

The good news is, by the age of 6 the incidence of ear infections are lower as the middle ear structures have matured and the body’s defences against these infections has improved.

What Are The Signs Of An Ear Infection?

Most ear infections are painful and may unfortunately occur before your child is old enough to tell you their ear(s) hurts, so here are a few things to look out for:

  • Lack of interest in food
  • Having trouble hearing.
