The Myth about Eating for Two

Now that you are pregnant, you will not only be eating for yourself but for your baby as well.

Simply increasing your food intake is not the answer. Instead it’s more important that you choose a varied, well-balanced diet to ensure that both your own and your baby’s nutritional needs are met.

You might be surprised to hear that in early pregnancy you don’t actually need to increase the amount of food you consume. During the first trimester your energy intake should actually remain the same as it was prior to pregnancy. However, as your energy needs increase during the second trimester you should consume an additional 1400kJ per day and an additional 1900kJ per day during the third trimester.

Following a nutritious eating plan during pregnancy can benefit your baby in more ways than most.
