Months 25-27

Mental Development

  • Listen closely to other people’s conversations
  • Know many body parts
  • Point to and name common objects
  • Have a rapidly growing vocabulary
  • Sometimes become completely absorbed in whatever activity they are doing
  • Create own words if they don’t know the right one to express their idea
  • Chatter constantly

Visual Development

  • Recognise themselves in a photograph
  • Enjoy looking at detailed pictures
  • Be more interested in objects in the distance
  • May be easily distracted as peripheral vision improves
  • Look through picture books and study objects in their hands more closely

Motor Development

  • Be able to hold a small glass with both hands
  • Open boxes to see what is inside
  • Dance to familiar music
  • Be able to wash and dry their hands
  • Brush their teeth with some help
  • Put on an item of clothing on their own
  • Start to unwrap objects
  • Be able to run, but may trip or have trouble coming to a stop
  • Be able to climb up almost anything, but may have trouble getting down
  • Jump, getting both feet off the floor

Social and Emotional Development

  • May occasionally bite others when angry or frustrated
  • Strive for a sense of independence
  • Be extremely curious about everything
  • Have difficulty sitting still and being quiet
  • Make their feelings (whether they be happy or grumpy) very apparent
  • Become over stimulated sometimes because they are not yet able to selectively tune out sights, sounds, and sensations
  • Show more signs of independence—“me do it” is their motto
  • Test limits, but respond to consistent, reasonable discipline
  • Respond well to a consistent schedule of daily activities
